The role of religion in the major celebrations of death.
The Afterlife:The romans believed that when a person died the persons spirt would go to the underworld (A gloomy place where the romans believed you soul went after you died). To get there, the dead needed to cross the River Styx. The dead person's family would leave a coin on the dead body, to pay the ferryman. Then the ferryman would take them across the River Styx on a boat, depending of how much you pay the better of a seat you will get. On the other side of the River Styx, you will pass Cerberus, the three-headed watchdog. Cerberus will be friendly he only becomes Unfriendly when the sprits try to get OUT of the Underworld unauthorised. Then you will stand before three judges who will ask you to account your life. Once this has been done you will be given the water of the River Lethe, the river of forgetfulness and one of five Rivers in the Underworld, which makes you forget your past life. You will then be sent to the Elysian Fields (a version of paradise) if you've been a warrior or hero, The Plain of Asphodel, if you've been a good citizen, where you will continue to live a good life as a spirit, or if you've really offended the gods to Tartarus, where you'll be punished by the Furies until your debt to society is paid. Your punishment all depends on your crime. Sometimes the judges will come back and decide if they want to change where you live or if they are going to let you live again this all depends on your past life/how you were killed/how you behave now.
